Returning Adult Rowers

Whether you’ve just completed our Adult Learn to Row program or you’re an experienced rower returning after some time away, we’re excited to have you back on the water. The Returning Rowers program is designed to help you continue building your skills, improve your technique, and reconnect with the camaraderie of rowing in Marquette. Please remember you must complete your Membership Registration before your first row of the season.

Four adult rowing enthusiasts wearing life jackets and helmets paddle a long yellow kayak on a calm, open body of water under a blue sky—perfect for intermediate rowers.
Five people in rowing gear stand in shallow water next to a yellow boat at sunrise or sunset, preparing for adult rowing for intermediate rowers on a calm lake with distant trees and hills in the background.

For Recent Learn to Row Graduates

If you completed our Learn to Row class last season and are ready for more, this program is your next step. You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Participate in regular practices with supportive teammates
  • Strengthen your rowing fundamentals
  • Gain confidence in both sweep and sculling boats
  • Learn boat handling and set-up

All coaches are U.S. Rowing Level II certified, ensuring a safe and educational experience for every participant. During the off-season, we also offer indoor erg training to our returning rowers in the winter months—reach out if you’re interested in staying active year-round.

What to Expect

Returning rowers will continue learning in coached sessions focused on refining technique, developing rhythm, and improving endurance. As you gain confidence, you’ll have the chance to join more advanced rows or mixed-experience lineups.

We also welcome rowers with prior experience who are looking to get back into the sport—whether you rowed in college, another club, or years ago and miss being on the water.

Getting Back into the Swing of Things

Our coaches will help you ease back into rowing safely and comfortably. You’ll have the chance to:

  1. Refresh your technique and timing
  2. Get reacquainted with equipment and water safety
  3. Rebuild fitness and rowing endurance
  4. Join other experienced members for regular rows

We also encourage experienced rowers to attend a few coached sessions before joining independent club rows to ensure everyone is comfortable and aligned on technique and safety standards.

Sweep Rowing and Sculling

Four people in bright yellow shirts and life vests stand in shallow water beside a long yellow rowing boat, each holding oars—an ideal scene of adult rowing for intermediate rowers on a calm lake beneath a partly cloudy sky.

Our club offers members the opportunity to train in both sweep rowing and sculling, providing a well-rounded experience on the water. In sweep rowing, each athlete uses one oar. Sculling, where rowers use two oars, allows for greater individual control and balance. Available to second-year rowers and beyond, sculling helps experienced athletes refine their technique, coordination, and overall skill.

We support scullers with regular sculling rows and Learn-to-Scull programs led by USRowing Level II coaches. After building a strong foundation in sweep rowing, members are encouraged to explore sculling to improve balance in the rowing shells and gain more confidence in their rowing skills. The club offers quad, double, and single sculls for member use. For questions about sculling, please contact Mary Ritter at mcritter77@yahoo.com.

An adult rowing for intermediate rowers, wearing a neon vest and cap, rows a single scull boat on calm water, with a tree-lined shore and buildings in the background under a partly cloudy sky.
Two people, both adult rowing for intermediate rowers, glide small boats across a calm lake under a clear blue sky. Trees and hills line the distant shore, their reflections shimmering in the serene morning waters.
