Collegiate Rowing
U.P. Rowing partners with Northern Michigan University’s Rowing Club to offer college students the opportunity to row on Lake Superior during the fall semester.
NMU Rowing Club in Partnership with U.P. Rowing
Northern Michigan University students who join the NMU Rowing Club train in collaboration with U.P. Rowing. New members learn the fundamentals of rowing during the fall semester and build strength and fitness through indoor erg training in the winter/spring. Both first-time rowers and students with prior high school rowing experience are encouraged to join.

Welcome to the Water
Whether you’ve just completed the NMU Learn to Row program or you have rowing experience from high school, we’re excited to have you join the club. The fall training program is designed to help you build your skills, improve your technique, and connect with the camaraderie of rowing with your fellow Wildcats.

Rowers New to the Sport
Students with no prior rowing experience are encouraged to join the NMU Rowing Club and will be taught the fundamentals of rowing. This program is designed to introduce rowing in a supportive, collegiate team environment while building a strong foundation for future seasons.
New rowers will have the opportunity to:
- Learn rowing fundamentals in a coached setting
- Train regularly with teammates and develop fitness and confidence
- Gain experience in both sweep and sculling boats
- Learn proper boat handling, equipment setup, and water safety
- Compete in rowing regattas in women’s, men’s, and mixed novice shells
Coaching is provided by USRowing certified coaches to ensure a safe, educational, and positive introduction to the sport. During the off-season, athletes participate in indoor erg training at the PEIF and may attend fall regattas as part of the NMU–U.P. Rowing program.
Returning & Experienced Rowers
The NMU Rowing Club also welcomes students with previous rowing experience, including former high school, collegiate, or club rowers, as well as those returning to the sport after time away. This program allows experienced athletes to continue developing their skills while integrating into a collegiate team environment.
Returning rowers can expect to:
- Refine technique, rhythm, and efficiency in coached practices
- Rebuild rowing fitness and endurance at a structured pace
- Row in advanced or mixed-experience lineups as appropriate
- Receive individualized feedback from experienced U.P. Rowing coaches
- Compete in rowing regattas in women’s, men’s, and mixed shells
Athletes will be supported as they transition back into rowing, with an emphasis on safe training, technical development, and team cohesion.
