Erging & Off-season
During the off-season, U.P. Rowing members stay connected with each other and the wider community through volunteering, social activities, and erging to stay fit and ready for the summer.
Off-season Erging (January–May)
During the off-season, U.P. Rowing members stay strong and connected through organized erging sessions held from January through May. These workouts focus on rowing technique, cardiovascular fitness, and building a solid foundation for the upcoming on-the-water season.
Erging sessions are hosted by certified coaches Sue Lakenen and Cassie Johnson, who guide athletes through structured workouts designed to support rowers of all experience levels. Whether you’re maintaining fitness or sharpening technique, off-season erging is a great way to stay engaged with the club during the winter months.

Social Activities
The U.P. Rowing off-season is about more than just training—it’s also a time to connect, have fun, and enjoy the Upper Peninsula together. Throughout the winter and spring, members participate in a variety of social activities organized by the club.
Examples of off-season social activities include:
- Attending the holiday Beer Choir at Ore Dock Brewing Company
- Hiking and snowshoeing adventures
- Cross-country skiing on NTN trails
- Cooking classes at the Marquette Food Co-op
- Yoga for Rowers, taught by club member Toni Fuentes
- Beginner Salsa Classes with Baila UP
- Pottery-making sessions at Hot Plate
- And many other member-driven events throughout the off-season
These activities help build camaraderie and keep the rowing community connected year-round. If you’re already a U.P. Rowing Member, check TeamSnap for upcoming social events!

Volunteering & Community Involvement
